Abstract

One of the most significant aspects in the incorporation process of the descendants of immigrants is linguistic incorporation, both in officially monolingual and, particularly in bilingual societies.

Catalonia's model of coexistence and integration calls for the creation of a common project of multilingual and multicultural coexistence, with the Catalan language as its backbone.

Undoubtedly, the linguistic attitudes held by the children of immigrants are among the most important factors in achieving this goal.

Within this framework, the objective of this article is to analyze the sociodemographic, socio-familial, psychosocial, and linguistic predictors that produce attitudes above or below the average, in the case of descendants of Ecuadorians, other nationalities of Latin America and Morocco in Catalonia.

These data result from the application of a questionnaire on attitudes and self-identifications, as well as two tests of language competence (in Catalan and Spanish).

The main results indicate that, although in a bivariate way the influential variables are numerous, when introduced in Logistic Regression Models, the most important ones connect with the sphere of self-identifications, place of birth (and implicitly the family language) and language use.

The implications of these results are discussed.
